What does the future of a forest look like? How do we care for our island woodlands to ensure they remain healthy and resilient for generations to come?

Join us for an inspiring morning walk through the beautiful Beecher Preserve on Lopez Island. This guided tour offers a special, behind-the-scenes look at the preserve and an introduction to the San Juan Preservation Trust's current efforts and long-term vision for its stewardship. Discover the science and strategy that goes into a sustainable forest management plan and see conservation in action. It's a perfect opportunity to connect with the land and learn how we are caring for this special spot on Lopez Island.

We are delighted to have this walk led by Dean Dougherty, SJPT’s Senior Director of Stewardship, bringing over two decades of experience in land management and conservation. With a master's degree specializing in invasive plant control, Dean has been instrumental in protecting and restoring habitats across the archipelago.

About the Beecher Preserve

The Beecher Preserve is a 40-acre property in the heart of Lopez Island that holds a high volume of deciduous trees, as well as mature cedar and fir stands. There is a half-mile trail that weaves through the property and it is a lovely experience to walk through.

Tour Details

⏰ Time: 11am - 12:30pm

🎟️ Cost: Free (Registration required)

🥾 What to Bring: Weather-appropriate clothing, sturdy footwear, and a water bottle.

📍Meeting Location: Meet in the Village, then we will carpool to Beecher Preserve, Lopez Island.

⚠️ Important to Note:

Registration is limited to 20 people. All participants must sign an SJPT liability waiver as part of the registration process.

Trail Conditions: Relatively flat, with subtle elevation changes. Hiking trails can be muddy in sections. Forested areas provided shade throughout the hike.
