Summary

Join SJPT and the Lopez Island Youth Conservation Corps Program of the San Juan Islands Conservation District to check out two long-term biological study sites that have been established on the Port Stanley Schoolhouse Preserve.

Description

As coordination and collaboration with the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) Program of the San Juan Islands Conservation District continues, SJPT is helping facilitate an open house in early August, with the Lopez Island Historical Society as a collaborator. The open house is intended to showcase student learning and accomplishments by the Lopez YCC group. At this event, taking place at the Lopez Schoolhouse Preserve and adjacent Historical Society parking lot, students will give presentations on some of the flora and fauna they have been collecting observations on and showcase their study sites to visitors.

In cooperation with the YCC, two long-term study sites have been established on the Lopez Schoolhouse Preserve. These 0.1-acre sites will be the focus of frequent biological observation conducted by the YCC during the summer and by the YCC’s after-school program during the remainder of the year. The goal is to study seasonal patterns in the flora and fauna of the ecology around the schoolhouse and coordinate this data collection effort with the National Phenology Network.
