Step Back in Time: Tharald Homestead Tours

Description

Marilyn and Fred Ellis Preserve, Shaw Island

A visit to the Tharald Homestead offers a unique opportunity to experience a pivotal era in the history of the islands. Join us to explore the cultural legacy we’ve inherited and ponder the one we will leave behind.

The History

At the heart of the 344-acre Marilyn and Fred Ellis Preserve stands the home of Norwegian immigrant Theodore Tharald. Built in 1883 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this original structure is a rare example of the skill and hard work required to carve out a life in the islands in the mid-nineteenth century.  This fascinating chapter of local history provides a vantage point to consider our relationship to land.

The San Juan Preservation Trust is pleased to share the story of the Ellis Preserves’ cultural history of connection to place, industriousness, and the ultimate gift of an extraordinary conservation legacy.
