Marilyn and Fred Ellis Preserve, Shaw Island Presented in celebration of Washington Museum Day

Drop by the Tharald Homestead to spend an afternoon at one of the islands' most significant historic sites. Explore at your own pace and chat with SJPT's Ellis Preserve Curator/Caretaker, Ruthie Dougherty, about the people who lived here and the conservation legacy we've inherited.

This open house is part of statewide Washington Museum Day, a day when museums and historic sites across Washington open their doors to connect communities with local history.

The History

At the heart of the 344-acre Marilyn and Fred Ellis Preserve stands the home of early settler Theodore Tharald. Built in 1883 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this original log house stands as an example of the skill and hard work required to build a life in the islands in the mid-nineteenth century.

The San Juan Preservation Trust is pleased to share what we know of a long and rich history of connection to place, industriousness, and the ultimate gift of an extraordinary conservation legacy.

Getting There

1. From the Shaw ferry landing, follow Blind Bay Rd as it curves right around the bay.

2. Continue straight to the intersection of Blind Bay Rd and Hoffman Cove Rd (approx. 2.3 miles from the ferry).

3. Turn left and proceed 0.8 miles.

4. Look for the preserve gate and driveway on your right.
